Just For A Time
You were a precious pearl
How I loved to see you shine,
You were the perfect girl.
And you were mine.
For a time.
For a time.
Just for a time.
by Maya Angelou
That poem really hit home today … the first year that Natalie is away from home on her birthday.
She turns 19 today and is away for her first year of college.
While I wouldn’t wish perfection on anyone … too much of a burden to live up to … she has been a joy and a treasure and an ever-unfolding lesson (maybe with the momentary exception of a year or so in middle school..) 🙂 No … even those tough middle school years taught me a few things though.
I am so proud of the strong, loyal, independent and insightful young woman that she has become. She’s beautiful … inside and out. Though I hope there are still a few life lessons I have to share with her, we are definitely at a place where she already has plenty to teach me, too. Whether its about languages, politics or gender studies, every time we talk I’m thrilled to hear about her new experiences. Excited to have her home for spring break to catch up.
Happy Birthday, Little Miss Natalie! Love, Mom
